The scope of this book is to collect from many sources into a single volume such counsels of writers of renown as might be serviceable to men of letters. A selection has been made of what has appeared likely to be the most acceptable rather to professional authors than to those who are only beginners or aspirants; but it is hoped that what is offered may prove serviceable to all.
