Welcome to the Introduction to Athletic Training and Emergency Care in Sports textbook! The focus of this text is to provide you, the reader, with two things: first, a broad understanding of the Athletic Training profession; and second, some basic skills that prepare you to enter an Athletic Training education program if you choose to pursue this wonderful profession. The first four chapters introduce the Profession of Athletic Training in an overview, Legal Issues in the profession, Emergency Planning and Management, and Pre-Participation Physical Exam issues. All of these help to provide a background of preparedness for the new Athletic Trainer. Chapters 5-10 then take the reader through injury types and evaluation basics, injury treatment options, and rehabilitation issues revolving around commonly seen athletic injuries. Finally, chapters 11-14 provide a basic understanding of the various types of emergencies that can and do happen in sports, including environmental conditions, cardiac and non-cardiac emergencies. Protective equipment is reviewed in detail to help with the prevention side of athletic injuries.
