It's 1988 and Tom Metzler's life is passing by in more ways than one. On legal business in London, he visits the Natural History Museum only to glimpse the most beautiful woman he has ever seen in his life. But after a fleeting glimpse of her eyes and a smile she is gone.

The same evening the mystery deepens as he meets her again in his hotel as if by chance and she greets him by name, instructing him to change his flight the following day and giving him new tickets and a passport under a new identity.

In a trance, he dutifully catches the TWA flight home and only when arriving at his Manhattan office the following day does the enormity of his chance meeting come to light: no one at all seems to recognise him.
