The Somali people have a rich culture of oral literature, they are called a nation of poets. Foreign travellers were astonished by the degree of the poetry practiced by the Somalis in the middle of the 19th Century. Richard Burton wrote in his famous book (The First Footsteps in East Africa) that “every man has his recognized position in literature as accurately defined as though he had been reviewed in a century of magazines.”The Word “sun” has the following different names in Somali: Qorrax, Cadceed, Libdho, Dhalco, Bacad, Milic, Cirid, Golcas,Gabbal. Different names indicate different degrees of hotness during the day.“Road” in Somali has the following different names: Jid, Tub, Haloosi, Daw, Marin, Dhabbo,hilin, Waddo, Toobiye, Wadiiqo. There are thousands of different vocabularies used in different occasions. The Author has done a great job of researchin collecting all these terms. It is one of the very few publications ever made in this new field. It is a must to read book for anyone who is interested in the Somali language and literature.
