In this collection of essays, the authors study, from different angles, the attitude of the ancient towards silence, in various contexts (religious, social, medical, and mythological). The underlying principle common to all the essays is a rigorously historical approach, whereby the starting point of each investigation is an analysis of the ancient texts themselves.
