Marcelino is a fiction novel based on my 91-year-old Aunt Ramona's recollection of events that happened during her childhood in and around Creedmoor, Texas. Prior to interviewing Aunt Ramona, I had little knowledge of my grandparents, Marcelino and Mama Maria. I was very surprised to learn that Mama Maria possessed two unique abilities: telekinesis and the power to heal the ailing. After hearing how my grandparents and their children had to live on the road for years as migrant workers and survived intact, I thought that was amazing. The best (or worse) was yet to come. During these terrible times Mama was not in her right mind because of a curse that was cast on her by a Comanche witch. That infliction caused untold misery on her family and slowly progressed to violence toward those around her. Marcelino, who feared the unknown, was determined to keep his family together, regardless of the craziness that was taking place. Sadly, though, his only defense was having his wife treated by a Mexican healer who was only after his money and revenge against a woman she saw as a threat. When the demon in Mama's mind finally takes full control of her, it makes for a terrifying time at the creek. The children lay poorly hidden, begging for Marcelino to find them, while their mother lurks overhead with a raised butcher knife and the devil in her eyes. Although Marcelino depicts life at its harshest, it is sprinkled with humor throughout.
