Chapter II from which the book takes its name, was originally given as an address. The remainder of the body of the book appears now for the first time, with the exception of Chapters VIII and IX on The Gods. In the Appendix, Carpenter includes three articles of a considerably earlier date, as in their way they contribute some light to the main questions of this book.
