Talks of secession points the way for a young immigrant to change his life. He enlists in the Union Artillery and assigned to Battery F, 3rd U.S. in the Army of the Potomac. He witnesses the reality of war, then its horrors. He has to learn how to live with his injuries, before he is able to court his future bride and see the war through.
