The book "Elements of Optical Networking" by Prof. Dr. Volkmar Bruckner is dedicated to education and further training of engineers in the field of telecommunication. The book is based on the fundamentals of physics and mathematics; central concern is an understandable, mainly qualitative description of problems, and their implementation in formulas and for practical use. This central theme is demonstrated by many examples and calculations as well as illustrations. These examples should convey a feeling for problems and limits of optical data communication. Long-time teaching experience at the University of Telecommunication in Leipzig permits the author to describe complicated processes in a readily understandable way. The "e-book" enclosed is new for both author and publisher. It contains links to corresponding web sites as well as to additional explanations and information. Exercises and examples are linked to further information, formulas and/or solutions. The more complicated relationships are illustrated by calculations in MathCad. A MathCad test version and corresponding programs are found on the CD as well.
This modern multi-medial system permits the reader to study this book anywhere and anytime. Further MathCad programs and additional information for downloading are also found on the publishers' OnlinePlus server. Doubtless this book will increase the ability of students to follow meetings and discussions in the fascinating field of optical communication technology and to solve practical tasks in this field.
