M.G. Blassingame's "Fields of the Fatherless" is about a DJ who defends himself against a would-be assassin who breaks into a popular "soul" radio station to kill him. So that he could buy time to call the police, Johnny attempts to render him unconscious by striking him on his head with a cold drink bottle; it collides with the attacker's tire iron, swinging at Johnny's head, breaks and slits his throat. To analyze himself, Johnny takes a leave of absence to go verbatim to a mountain to pray for forgiveness. He ends up in the military, and then in Europe, hand-over-heel in love with an attractive European woman who is (falsely?) accused of being a Nazi spy. And Johnny is off to another entirely different adventure.
