From April 1942 to March 1944, Helene Berr, a recent graduate of the Sorbonne, kept a journal that is both an intensely moving, intimate and harrowing document, and a text of astonishing literary maturity. What is known is that Berr and her parents were deported to Auschwitz, and she died at Bergen-Belsen shortly before its liberation. Her journal is both uplifting and horrifying; and has been translated from the French by David Bellos.
