To proclaim the death of Jesus Christ as God's saving act for the world embarrasses many pastors, as the Good Friday sermon shows at the latest. In the face of this embarrassment, the present book seeks to show how early Christianity endeavored to understand Jesus' death as an act of God and to make it understandable; that they lag behind the intended cause and constantly challenge new efforts and attempts.
