The Conservation of Youth and Defense of Age
1912. These are days when hygiene is earnestly preached, and, with somewhat abated zeal, is practiced. The fact that in the 13th century it was a popular and much appreciated study by the doctors and laymen of the Middle Ages deserves recognition, and most of the doctrines taught them can be safely followed now. The periodical starving cure as advised by Arnaldus is perhaps the method of which modern science accepts as particularly efficacious and advanced. This work embodies the matured advice of an experienced and popular physician of the 13th century. Written in Old English, it presents a good illustration of early 16th century English writing, spelling and book making.
