Metropolitan Police Images: Motor Vehicles
Police Vehicles are one of the most visible aspects of policing work. They are among those peculiar things, like memorable songs, that can bring instantly to mind another time or place. Many will remember the black Wolseley patrol car which roars out on to London’s Embankment from what was then New Scotland Yard, warning bells ringing, in the opening clip of the 1960s TV series ‘No Hiding Place’. Beyond the marked cars, however, lies a fascinating array of covert and specialist modes of transport. The fascinating photographs in his book, drawn from the archives of the Metropolitan Police Service, demonstrate the range of historical vehicles that have been deployed over the decades since the foundation of the service in 1829.
