When Paul sees Maggie at the station, she represents for him everything he has always wanted. Prompted perhaps by a book he has been discussing that morning, he follows her - not for an hour or a day but for weeks on end, trying to understand what it is that makes her so special. He does not notice the same thing happening in reverse.
