Volume 2 of 2. This work consists of a series of novellas. Volume 2 includes "A Fallen Idol," regales the legend surrounding the fall of shrine of Chalanka and the attempt on the part of a highly cultivated Babu to connect it with certain events which form the European part of this story. How far this attempt may be justified, the historian telling the tale presumes not to decide, but he submits the tradition here for what it may be worth, on the bare chance that it may be accepted as shedding some faint light upon much that is otherwise inexplicable. Also found within is "The Talking Horse," the tale of Gustavus Pulvertoft and the horse he rents for an afternoon jaunt, who finds Pulvertoft such a crummy rider that the horse MUST speak; "Salted Almonds, Or Playing the Game" and "The Brass Bottle."
