His art combines the technical mastery of draughtsmanship, attained during rigorous training as a pupil of James Cowie, with the sumptuous Mediterranean colour of his Italian heritage. The book tells the story of a long career from joining Gray's School of Art in Aberdeen as a fourteen-year-old prodigy, through thirty years as an inspirational teacher and Head of the School of Painting at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee to his final years painting still-life and beach scenes of dramatic highly-keyed colour. His paintings, seventy-one of which are illustrated in colour, reflect a life of accomplishment and a personality that combined the best characteristics of his Italian ancestry and his Scottish upbringing.
