This document presents a procedure for monitoring and assessing the ecological status of lakes. The nine-phase procedure takes into account available data on both the shoreline area and the open water area to facilitate an integrated assessment of the ecological status of lakes. The assessment of the ecological status is an important issues in the implementation phase of the EU Water Framework Directive. It is also a long learning process that covers varying natural conditions and different countries in Europe.
