The Directive (2001/81/EC) of the European Parliament and the Council on national emission ceilings for atmospheric pollutants will set maximum limits for emissions responsible for acidification, eutrophication and ground-level ozone in the Community Area. Each Member State must draw up a National Programme to lower emissions of sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, ammonia and volatile organic compounds, so that the national ceiling given in Appendix I of the Directive can be adhered to as of 2010.
