Transforming Tradition - A Method for Maintaining Tradition ina Craft and Design Context
This study explores the idea of maintaining tradition as a means to continuing developing various old traditions by making them beneficial and suitable for contemporary lives. Based on this idea, the study proposes a model of 'Transformation of Tradition' that can be used as a tool by artists, craftspeople, designers, and art-design students when dealing with works of 'maintaining tradition'. Viewed from a craft and design context, this model shows that a tradition can be updated and maintained by connecting it continuously with modernity. By bridging tradition and modernity, we link the past with the present and the future, and enable every culture, every society, to continue to flourish on the basis of their own roots, their unique local resources, their history, and their preferences. This is where many ideas on sustainability reside.
