Since American taxpayers give Israel over $8 million per day, the Council for the National Interest, a Washington Dibased lobbying organization, is organizing a campaign to call on Congress to demand that Israel end human rights violations. America has given Israel a total of $135 billion, in direct aid, and over $12 billion given in loans. Although Israel is believed to be the only nuclear-armed country in the Middle East - with a nuclear arsenal of at least 200 warheads -- it maintains a policy of ambiguity on the issue, neither admitting nor denying that it does posses atomic arms. The distinction is important, because the costs suffered by the U.S. as a result of its blind support for Israel exceed by many times the substantial amount of direct aid to Israel. Some of these "indirect" costs would include the costs to U.S. manufacturers of the Arab boycott, the costs to U.S. companies and consumers of the Arab oil embargo and consequent soaring oil prices as a result of U.S. support for Israel, and the costs of U.S. unilateral economic sanctions on Iran, Iraq, Libya, and Syria.
