Della is an eight year old girl growing up in a rural sugar estate settlement owned by one of the largest estates in Jamaica in the late 1960's. Her ancestors had arrived on the island during the latter part of the nineteenth century to work as indentured laborers. She is the third of fourth children who has an insatiable thirst for knowledge and is capable of transforming ordinary everyday events during one midsummer holiday into unforgettable adventures. These adventures help to paint a picture of life as it may have occurred, on the sugar estate settlement through the eyes of a child.
