Orchideeën van de Benelux describes all the orchids of the Netherlands, Belgium and the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg in one book, including all extant and extinct species. They ordered logically in alphabetical order with all their peculiarities explained in great detail. Extensive attention is paid to the most important subspecies and varieties. The taxa are presented using their correct nomenclature, types, basionyms, identifying traits with the most important field characters, flowering times, habitats, and ecology, as well as their overall distribution. The distribution in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg is discussed per country using both historical and current information. The species descriptions are completed with numerous photographs of plants and their habitats, as well as all known hybrids. Shown for each main species are herbarium sheets of extinct species per country and distribution maps with a grid size of with 4 km2 covering three periods: 1850-1950, 1951-1999, and 2000-2019.
The introduction extensively describes systematics, biology, ecology, and life cycle or the orchids of the Benelux. Additionally, several chapters deal with topics such as reintroductions, neophytes, protection and laws, declines and threats, orchird-rich landscapes and habitats, as well as phytogeographical districts and information on the distribution maps. On top of all this matters of taxonomy and nomenclature are treated, shortly discussing the biological species concept.
