Bass-baritone Florian Boesch, top class Lied-singer, blooms in a Schubert programme (finest orchestrations by Brahms and Webern) with the renowned Concentus Musicus, the Viennese orchestra now led by the talented Stefan Gottfried. Next to these sublimated pieces, the Concentus performs a finished version of the mysterious ‘Unfinished’ Symphony.
A Scherzo by Schubert himself was completed by a composer (Nicola Samale) and a musicologist (Benjamin-Gunnar Cohrs) so that the result is faithful to the musician's special expression. And Rosamunde’s Overture concludes this re-enactment: a moving experience and a touching journey through time.
Florian Boesch’s strong voice and exquisite diction are beautified by Nikolaus Harnoncourt’s legendary ensemble. Stefan Gottfried, his worthy heir, leads the musicians on the romantic paths that combinate love and grief.
"I’m still in two minds as to how well this completion of Schubert’s score (fleshed out with a reupholstered scherzo and an en’tracte from Rosamunde) hangs together, but the poise and lyricism of the first two movements are thoroughly winning on their own terms. Boesch contributes incisive and intense accounts of seven songs in Brahms's and Webern’s orchestrations, spurred onto near-Wagnerian grandeur by the thrilling brass in Gruppe aus dem Tartarus." - Presto Classical, January 2019.
