Mortal Death of a Myth records as a diary and journal the adventures of the central character during the 15 months he is trapped in an uncharted valley in the Brazillian rain forest. His only companion is a young woman with whom he is unable to communicate freely because of her apparent lifetime of isolation from civilisation. The young couple circumnavigate the valley seeking escape but all-encompassing cliffs thwart them. All they can do is attempt to dig a tunnel through the cliff face. Discovery of skeletons inside the partially excavated tunnel provide clues as to how the young woman became trapped in the valley and to her possible parentage. Their partnership is dramatically ended by total destruction of the valley in which they had begun to build a life together. Survival of the young woman gives credence to the Paruiru Indian legend of the Goddess of Life and Beginning. The authorities assume the central character perished during the destruction of the valley and concentrate their efforts on establishing his identity and nationality.
