The Forgotten Notebook is based on sketches Betty Churcher drew in the great galleries of the world when she raced through them as director of the National Gallery of Australia in the 1990s on her way to arrange the loans of artworks for her series of blockbuster exhibitions.
It was only when she was searching for a document that she found this ‘forgotten’ notebook in the middle of 2014. Betty researched and wrote the manuscript in six months. She died as the manuscript was sent to be copy edited.
In the format of her best-selling Australian Notebooks, The Forgotten Notebook includes Betty’s sketches inspired by some of the big names in art: da Vinci, Bellini, Titian, Michelangelo, Cezanne and Picasso. By revisiting these drawings Betty’s text brings new understanding to these great artworks.
