This book gives voice to a 6 year old boy named Cole, as he bridges the gap between his Grandpa, a disease called Parkinson's, and the recognition that some kids have unconscious fears of the elderly - especially those in wheelchairs or afflicted with a debilitating disease. This story about a visit to Cole's classroom with his Grandpa in a wheelchair, allows kids to learn more about the disabled that they may not see every day in their lives. By having a discussion about fears in life in the classroom, including why we stay back from "scary" animals like porcupines, and why not to be afraid to approach a person with a disability, teaches kids about conscious and unconscious fears of the disabled. This tender story invites the reader to appreciate the person within, regardless of a perceived fear of another in a wheelchair or simply having advanced age. This greater understanding is so important at this time in history when elders are living longer.
