New media has generated "new literacies" that are often left unaddressed by traditional curriculum-moreover, new media has made pop culture products even more ubiquitous for today's students. Indeed, social media and other technological innovations have greatly spurred the growth of both global fandoms (anime, manga) and what might be termed "mega-fandoms" (Harry Potter, Twilight). Yet schools tend to take a protectionist stance regarding students' fannish tendencies, perhaps occasionally appeasing them through projects that exploit them for engagement purposes. The result is that educators mostly miss opportunities to enhance critical literacies and support existing curriculum through authentic encounters with the real-world media products that inspire youth and about which they possess so much prior, and often expert, knowledge. Beyond Engagement: Pop Culture Fandom in Today's Classroom deals squarely with high-interest content such as superheroes and blockbuster movie franchises and provides entirely new ways of thinking about pop culture in the classroom, as well as practical strategies for curriculum integration.
