Two years on from their Gramophone Award-winning account of The Midsummer Marriage, Edward Gardner and the London Philharmonic Orchestra continue flying the flag for Michael Tippett with terrific live recordings of two works from the mid-1950s which had a rocky start in life: the Piano Concerto and Symphony No. 2. Steven Osborne approaches the technical hurdles of the concerto with a clear head, and Gardner has a wonderful way of spotlighting inner details as well as tapping into the infectious energy which thrums through both pieces.
