This text is designed for courses on Biostatistics in a wide variety of biological and health sciences.
The third edition addresses the plethora of important and novel statistical methods, especially useful for the health researcher, that have developed and/or become available and implementable (via computer programs) since the last edition in 1986.
Since it is written for the non-statistically sophisticated student and researcher in the biomedical sciences, examples and illustrations form the backbone of the presentations, guiding readers toward an understanding and appreciation of the methods. In addition to simple (small, simple size) illustrations, real data from biomedical studies are used to reinforce the utility and interpretation of the techniques. Several larger examples are used repeatedly (from chapter to chapter) to demonstrate how investigators develop and carry out a study.
While the text does not adhere to the need to use any particular computerized statistical package, there are many prototype, computerized outputs of statistical analyses that are illustrated and discussed in detail.
