Mary Grant Bruce (1878 1958) was an Australian author of childrens books. Her 37 books were popular in her native Australia as well as in Great Britain. The Billabong series, focusing on the adventures of the Linton family on Billabong Station in Victoria was her best-known work. This series was quite popular in the United Kingdom during World War 1. Bruce helped form a national identity for Australia especially in relation to visions of the Bush. Her vivid descriptions of the beauty and dangers of the Australian landscape, and humorous, colloquial dialogue gave her writing its unique color. A Little Bush Maid, published in 1910, was her first major success. It was originally published as a serial in the children's page of the Lead. With the success of this novel Bruce was able to devote herself to writing fulltime. This is the story of Norah, a young girl living on a large station in Victoria, Australia.
