The Oxford Book of Choral Music by Black Composers is a landmark collection of non-idiomatic compositions from the sixteenth century to the present day, providing a comprehensive introduction to an area of choral music that has been historically under-represented.
35 pieces for SATB choir, unaccompanied or with piano or organ. Mixture of sacred and secular non-idiomatic works, including anthems, choral art songs, madrigals, motets, and part-songs. Pieces from the Renaissance, Classical, and Romantic eras, in addition to the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Several pieces published here for the first time.
Features composers from a variety of nations, including Brazil, Canada, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Includes a general introduction, biographical information for each composer, and commentary for each piece, including editorial practice and source information where applicable. Playable piano reductions for rehearsal purposes, where needed.
"This expansive collection is both historical and impressively up to the present moment. [...] The 35 pieces are all supported by a comprehensive commentary which will surely spark interest in exploring further works by the featured composers and also by other Black composers. Whether used as a teaching resource or for performance, it should expand imaginations and start to address the lack of representation of Black composers in the choral canon. Equally important, there is some stunning music to sing which will be enjoyed by youth and adult choirs alike." - Choir & Organ
